Bansky on Advertising // New Orleans
Quote
People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.
You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.
Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.
You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

Art Swoon: “The Space Between” by Derek Cracco
When I went to The opening of A Dog From Hell at Beta Pictoris Gallery, two pieces really caught my attention. They were Derek Cracco’s “The Space Between.” It was really wonderful to see this work coming from a Birmingham native! I personally really enjoyed these pieces and the extra visual dimension that they gave to emotional disconnect.
In Derek’s own words:
Space Between is an exploration of contemporary relationships filtered through fairy tales and folklore. The two largest works each explore the emotional spaces that exist between couples. They are grounded in the theory of the “Distancer and the Pursuer”. This theory suggests that, in any given relationship, the emotional space between couples is always the same. One person takes on the role of the distancer, meaning that they pull away from the other, and the other pursues. At times the roles switch, leaving the emotional distance between the two exactly two the same, and thereby never allowing their emotional states to meet. The path through the woods is a reference to this never ending journey. These works are constructed with ink jet prints and model train landscapes, creating images that oscillate between a flat, two dimensional surface and the three dimensional hills and valleys created from the landscape miniatures.

Inspirational Art: Suspended Together
via: Suspended Together | Colossal.
Suspended Together” is an installation that gives the impression of movement and freedom. However, a closer look at the 200 doves allows the viewer to realize that the doves are actually frozen and suspended with no hope of flight. An even closer look shows that each dove carries on its body a permission document that allows a Saudi woman to travel. Notwithstanding their circumstance
The artist reached out to a large group of leading women from Saudi Arabia to donate their permission documents for inclusion in this artwork. “Suspended Together” carries the documents of award-winning scientists, educators, journalists, ens, all Saudi women are required to have this document, issued by their appointed male guardian.gineers, artists and leaders with groundbreaking achievements that gave back to their society. The youngest contributor is six months old and the oldest is 60 years old. In the artist’s words, “regardless of age and achievement, when it comes to travel, all these women are treated like a flock of suspended doves

Presentation: “Font Swoon – Advanced Web Typography” at WordCamp Atlanta
At WordCamp Atlanta this past weekend I gave a presentation called “Font Swoon – Advanced Web Typography.” We geeked out on fonts that I like an discussed methods of implementation.. and some neat type scripts and extensions. It was a fun talk as I especially love it when I can speak on something I’m passionate about.
without further delay:
I’m speaking at Future Insights Live!

I’m so excited and thrilled that I was asked to speak at Future Insights Live conference in Vegas! It is a Carsonified conference that is combining “the future of mobile“, “the future of web apps“, and “the future of web design” into a whole week of incredible speakers, content, and ideas!
I will be speaking on “Responsive Web Design” in the future of mobile track! Here is my talk description:
Websites are all about content. People can access your content many different ways and formats with mobile devices, iPads, phones, etc. The questions are: how can we maintain control over the display of our content and keep our brand consistent? How can we try to provide the best user experience on any platform?
Enter Responsive Web Design. Many experts are not leaning on one static design but on structured content that adapts to its given environment. In this talk, we are going to take a look at responsive web design techniques out there including: progressive enhancement, flexible grids, media queries, flexible images & video, & other methods of implementation.
If you saw my talk in WordCamp San Francisco, never fear. It will be over 9 months since that talk and a lot has happened in the world of responsive design since then. So expect fresh content! I hope to see y’all there!
